saving as an mpg and separate movies in one movie file

I've saved a couple of movies in Windows Media Format. I'd like to save them
as mpg files because I'm more familiar with mpg files. I don't think I can
save movie files in Windows Movie Maker as mpg files though. If I wanted to,
what's the best way to accomplish that?

The reason is, I have a lot of old (well, not THAT old) TV shows from the
80's and 90's on VHS tape. I use WinTV to record the VCR tapes to my hard
drive. I then burn multiple mpg files to CD using Nero Express. I tried
Windows Movie Maker to edit the commercials out, which works great, but I'd
like to save the new movie file as mpg.

Does anyone have thoughts on editing then burning files to CD or DVD? Is WMM
Format the way to go, or should I monkey around with converting a movie file
from WMM to mpg?

Usually I burn multiple mpg files onto one CD. I haven't found anything in
WMM that would allow me to separate a movie into distinct parts so each part
could be selected for viewing from a CD. Because of this, I prefer (so far)
multiple mpg files on a CD. Hmmmmm. Perhaps the better way is to save the WMM
movie file to my hard drive, then burn multiple WMM files with my burner
software to the CD. Is WMM the way to go ?

Sorry for the multiple questions. They are related though.
