WMM sees MPEG video as audio?

I'm having problems with WMM. I tried to drag an MPEG video down to the
timeline and it would only let me put it in the audio slot, not the video
slot.

The video plays fine in Windows Media Player. I downloaded GSpot for MPEG
and it said the codec for the video was installed.

The thing is, we had to reinstall Windows XP last week because our harddrive
died. And before that I wasn't having any problems, but now all the videos
that used to work fine are only working as audio in WMM.

Can anyone think of a reason why this would be happening and how I can fix
it? Please?

As time goes by, Movie Maker has been getting tighter and tighter on
enforcing the standards for file types, which means that some today don't
work as well in it as they used to. With a fresh install, your system might
be more up to date than it used to be.

MPEG-2 files should be converted to AVI files, not used directly as source
files. Having codecs to view MPEG-2 files on your system doesn't mean you
have codecs that support the editing process.

GSpot says that the codec is MPEG-1. And I only installed XP for the first
time in January this year and I used the same disk to reinstall it this time,
so I don't see what the difference would be.

Please help. I don't know what to do. I've tried everything I can think of.
I've uninstalled programs and reinstalled programs and uninstalled codecs and
reinstalled codecs and searched message boards for answers.

I don't understand why these files were working fine before I reinstalled
XP. And I don't know how to figure out what's wrong. We saved all our old
windows information, but I don't know what files it needs to start working
again.

Does anyone have any idea what programs I could used to find this out? I've
already tried GSpot and AVIcodec, both of which say that the right codecs are
installed.

I've sent you an e-mail with the snapshot. The attached file is called
Gspot.jpg and the subject is "GSpot Snapshot".

Thank you.

Nope. :( I have files on other drives that don't work either. The drives are
just... storage space for files. Nothing unusual.
