Wireless Networking Question

I have a problem with my wireless connection on my laptop computer. I am using Windows XP Home SP2, using a D-Link wireless router at home on a workgroup network. When IEEE 802.1x Authentication is enabled, my internet connection disconnects frequently and won't reconnect unless I reboot the computer. If IEEE 802.1x Authentication is disabled on my computer, the wireless connection works fine.

Is IEEE 802.1x Authentication useful for added security? Should I just leave it turned off and forget about it? When I installed the operating system and wireless drivers, it was turned on by default.

Thanks! Kevin

Unless you have a server to authenticate against, that setting should not
be checked. Most home setups do not need this box checked. If the setting
is checked and there is no server, you will see the behavior that you
describe: frequent disconnects about every 10 minutes.

This is the clearest answer I've received for this question from anyone.

By the way, how does someone become a MS-MVP?

Thanks! Kevin
