wireless network newbie

I want to set up wireless in my home. I have a broadband basic connection,
Vista Home Premium and an HP laptop with a Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN
pre-installed. I know almost nothing about computers. I need a range radius
of about 40', (there are several walls in this radius. I've read a lot about
Vista issues with wireless, so I'm not sure which router to get. Also
worried about security. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I also don't
want to go "on the cheap" and have nothing but frustration. I use the
internet for email, music and video. Is there a router out there that can
give me all of this, with a simple set up, and what security software should
I use? Thanks!

I'm using a LInkksys WRT-54GS (the S is for SpeedBoost - won't have any
effect on your Broadcom card) and it works just fine with my simialrly
equipped Compaq. It's easy to set up, and has been very reliable for the
past couple years.

It's probably still a bit early to invest in 802.11N routers - I think
they're still getting the bugs out and prices are still at the upper end.
And as your laptop doesn't support N, why pay now?

I run my on Netgear DG834G with an Intel card and it works just fine at
100mbps.

What more do you want. I use it in my garden shed and still a strong signal
fom the house at some 130 meters.

I bought mine on Ebay for £19.50.

You need to post to alt.internet.wireless and get help from people that do
that kind of thing for their livelihood.
