Startup slowing since going wireless?

I've setup a wireless router for my parents today (an Echolife HG520,
which their provider Talk Talk sends out, though they initially had
the wired equivalent). This is on a laptop with Vista Home Premium
on, dual core 1.5 ghz processor, 2 gb RAM. My dad seems to think the
laptop is starting up more slowly and this, coupled with manually
having to startup his wireless card and the age/technophobia factor
has made him not quite as pleased as I'd be if I had wireless
broadband. :) The speed seems about 1.2 meg better too for some
reason.

Is it likely that the startup is slower, and if so why? is it
necessary or can anything be tweaked? I did turn Telnet client on at
first, but as I understand it that's for having a home network, not
really necessary in a one computer household? (Although I can't say
startup was any qucker when I'd turned it off so maybe I'll put it
back on for in case I bring my netbook here.)

The wireless card is turned on with Fn and F10 - would it be possible
to make the wireless come on automatically, as it does if the
computer's merely being restarted. Despite having a home full of
other junk they're not at present people who leave their computer/
broadband on.

Any other relevant remarks for a wireless newbie are also welcome.
Thanks muchly in advance.
