Is there such thing as a hard drive that can be setup as a wireless
device? THat is, I want one that works just like my laptop -
stand-alone device connected to my PC only wirelessly.

Do you realize that it will be extremely, painfully slow?

For it to be wireless, you're needing it (the electronics on
that external device to act as a host itself, unlike with a
typical USB-connected external... that makes it essentially
a NAS (network attached storage).

Google for "wireless NAS", or here are some,

Im afraid there's no such thing. People in your situation use a USB 2.0
connected external harddrive.

Here are three links that appear to have what you are asking about.

Maxtor/Linksys at: http://www.techspot.com/story13746.html
or
Asus at: http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/YRtBdcdoWel2Yg.html
or
NetDisk Wireless at:

I'm sure there are others selling similar devices but I'll leave it up to
you to carry on with the hunt.

I'm not sure if I do understand correctly what you mean, but you could have
a network hard drive. It's connected to a router whether hard wire or
wireless and you thus can access it via the router from any PC. But that
would be more for storage use than a constant accessing working hard drive.

As an example.......
