I have a strange problem with trying to connect another
PC to my home network using a wireless USB adapter.
The network consists of 2 other PCs connected to a DLINK
DI-624 router, one wireless, the other through ethernet.
All 3 PCs are running Windows XP Home SP2. The 2 working PCs are
connected using DHCP and have no problems.
The PC I'm adding to the network has a wireless USB adapter
(Airlink+). I installed the software for it and it worked --
got an IP address, could ping, and access the internet.
Created more user accounts, all of which have admin
privileges, when I log on to one of those accounts, the
wireless adapter connects to the router, but can't get an
IP address. All the IP properties look OK (set to obtain an
IP address automaticly, etc). The wireless utility for the
adapter reports that it is transmitting, but it is not receiving.
It's set up to use WEP 64-bit keys, and I've even re-entered the
keys in the non-connecting user accounts. The XP firewall is
turned on in all accounts, and the wireless configuration
utility runs in all accounts. I've updated the wireless utility
and driver to the latest versions (Oct 04).
Thinking that it may be some sort of problem with a registry
setting or something being set in the user account which I
installed the software, I uninstalled the software and then
re-installed it in one of the non-working accounts. This
caused no change as it still only works in the original
account, and doesn't work in the account I re-installed it under.
So I know the device can transmit and receive with wireless router,
and that it is possible to get a DHCPed IP address, it's just that
there's probably some setting in the one working account that isn't
set for the other accounts. Any ideas?
