Wireless ADSL Router

I was using a Broadband Modem connecting two PC's - one running XP Home and
the other 98SE - both quite well. I bought a Notebook with XP Home which has
Wi-Fi and had asked the ISP to replace the modem with one which also caters
to Wi-Fi. They have provided me with a HUAWEI Wireless ADSL Router. I
connected the two desktops using my own Black Box Router as before and they
both work well.

As to the Notebook, it shows the following Error msg if set to obtain IP
address automatically:

"This connection has limited or no connectivity."
"You might not be able to access the Internet or some other network
resources."

If IP address is set manually then there is full connectivity but it still
does NOT access the Internet!
The ISP's Router Manual says that the DHCP Server is disabled!
What can be done?

If you set the IP address manually, you also need to set the Default
Gateway and DNS Server addresses.

Does the router manual say how to enable the DHCP server?

What is your "Black Box Router"? Is it needed in the network? Can
the new wireless router do the job without the other one?

Thank you Steve.
Yes, I had also set the Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses. The User
Manual infact says that it is a "Wireless ADSL Access Point"! Yes, there is
provision to enable the DHCP Server. I use the Black Box Router more as a
hub to connect to my other PC's thru Ethernet. All three PC's incl the
Notebook works well when I connect it to the Ethernet in my own Router. I
suppose that this means that the default IP settings of the ADSL Access
Point is consistent with the IP settings and the Subnet mask of the PC's!
The problem arises if I were to manually configure the ADSL's settings by
accessing the Web-based configuration manager! The Notebook works (I tried a
different IP setting!)but NOT the other TWO PC's with Ethernet - as I
suppose that they are set to obtain the IP address automatically!

Should I then manually configure the other two PC's too to obtain IP
address? They have been working well (infact all three) when using the
Ethernet. Is it normal for Wireless NOT to obtain IP address automatically?!
Thanking you

A "Wireless ADSL Access Point" doesn't sound like a router to me. If
it's just an access point, not a router, you shouldn't enable its DHCP
server, because the computers must get their TCP/IP configurations
from the "Black Box Router".

So, is it a router or an access point? What is its make and model
number? What ports does it have for connecting to other devices?

I've seen cases where a wireless access point doesn't pass DHCP
traffic correctly, preventing computers from obtaining an IP address.
I'm sorry, but I don't know of a solution to that problem.

I recommend that you consult with the ISP who provided the equipment.

Thank you Steve. The Box containing the Modem says it is a
"Wireless ADSL Router".
The supplied CD says
"Quidway W1000 Series Wireless Access Device
WA1003A Wireless ADSL Access Point User CD-ROM"
The make is HUAWEI, Shenzhen, PRC.

It has an ADSL (RJ11), USB and an Ethernet(RJ45) Port and comes with a
Splitter.
I have taken the supplied cable from the Modem to my Black Box Router's WAN
Port. My Router has 4 Lan Ports and I have connected using cables to the TWO
desktops (Compaq Presario's) and to the Notebook (Acer 3003).

All THREE work well using the cable connection.
I am just NOT able to connect using the Wireless for the Notebook! One other
query. Can I TRY to connect by setting the Modem to access thru PPPOE?
I understand if you are NOT able to help me, but, for what it is worth, I
give below
the Factory Default Settings of this Modem.
Thanking you
