wireless adapter restarts computer when inserted to USB

Did you load software first or just plug it in? Is that what you are
supposed to do per the manufacturer? Some products tell you to
install the drivers / software from a supplied CD first, then connect
the hardware.

A crash could be a severe overload on the USB root Hub.
Is the Wireless adapter a USB 1(.1) or USB 2.0 device ?
If it is a USB1(.1) device try to insert it into a different socket
on the PC. ( Or alternately remove other USB peripherals to
lessen the load on the controller/hub )
