Wired netowork connection disappears...

Hello,

I seem to have developped this problem where by my Wired connection appears
to have disappeared. I'll explain...

I have a wired connection called "Ethernet". If the cable is plugged in,
it's fine. If I disconnect the cable, I see "Cable Disconected" as you would
expect. Then I go to Network Connections in Control Panel and I don't even
see the connection (I used to, even when the cable was disconnected).

If I restart my laptop, or put it into standby then resume it, then go to
Network Connections and have a look, "Ethernet" is there for about 10
seconds, then it disappears completely until I connect a LAN cable.

I know this isn't affecting the operation, but it shouldn't be happening and
I'd like to understand why it is.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,
Matt

There is a service called workstation (right click on My Computer | Manage |
Services and Applications). Is it enabled when the network connection
"disappears"?

On some laptops, I think in particular new ones, (mine does), the network
driver will disable (to save power) when unconnected. There might be
something wrong in the driver that makes it disappear. I think you should
contact your manufacturer or go to their website to see if there is an
updated driver. Your support call would be covered by your warranty.

Hi Bob,

Strange.. the network adapter's not showing in Device manager until I plug
in the cable. This has only just started happening, so I can only assume
that one of the recent WindowsUpdates has done this. So I guess it's down to
seom power saving mode.

Ho hum. As long as it works when the cable's plugged in.

Cheers,
Matt
