When I explore or open the cd-rom it shows the same contents as the old cd.
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver. It will see the contents
of the cd that was in it but continues to show that cd's content when I
change cd's.

I think you have what called Phantom issue, the solution to try is unplug
the Ribben Cable for the CD-Rom and Plug it again in the IDE for the CD-Rom
and also the Electric cable to the CD-Rom.
Becareful, don't poke arround there just unplug and Replug the Ribben cable
again and out, you don't need to fry your Motherboard do you?.
HTH.
Please let us know.

I tried it but still will only display the contents of the first cd that I
put in. I also just realized that my 2nd cd-rom is doing the same thing. I
rarely use it, maily my cdr drive.

You may need to buy a new *Ribbon* cable for them and see if that will solve
the problem.
When you look in the Device manager is there are any Exclamation Mark on the
CD-Rom?.
HTH.

Try hitting F5 to refresh the view.

SYMPTOMS
When you view the contents of a CD-ROM in Windows Explorer, you can
see the name of the CD-ROM in the left pane, and the folders are displayed
in the right pane. However, after you remove the CD-ROM and insert a
different CD-ROM, the right pane may still display the folders from the
first CD-ROM even though the left pane correctly displays the name of the
new CD-ROM.

CAUSE
This problem can occur if you are using Folder view in Windows Explorer. The
view may not be automatically refreshed in Folder view in Windows Explorer.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
* Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer.
* Do not use Folder view in Windows Explorer.

I tried to refresh and it refreshes but shows the old info. I've even tried
to do a system retore to an earlier date but no good. I have discovered that
what ever cd is in either of my cd roms when I reboot I can open and explore.
The desktop icon changes to that cd and will run the cd fine. However, when
I put in a different cd it won't update. That's on either drive. Unless I
reboot with the cd I want to use in the drive.

The desktop icon changes to that cd

What desktop icon?

What happens if you close Windows Explorer and type d: or e: into Start
| Run and click OK?

If it really is a hardware problem, I haven't a clue.

Sorry, I should have been clear. The shortcut icon on the desktop. I have
found a work around. In order to change cd's I have to uninstall the drive.
(That goes for both of my cd rom drives. The CDR and 2nd cd drive.) then I
change cd's. I add hardware. When the drive is ready it shows the changed
cd. Again though it won't let me change cd's. I've wondered in XP is there
anything in the registery that controls this action. I'm completely stumped.
Thanks for your help.

You have shortcuts to D: and E: on the Desktop?

What do they point to?

Right click the shortcut
Click Properties.
On the Shortcut tab, click the Find Target button.

What happens??

Does anything open??

Do you get an error message?

Also...
Right click the shortcut
Click Properties.
On the Shortcut tab, what's in the Target box?

When you open the Shortcut's Properties, the text in the Target box should
be highlighted.
Hit Ctrl + C to copy the text.

Paste it into a message and post back.

What antivirus software do you have?

When I use Folder view in Windows Explorer and eject a CD from D: or E:, the
instant the tray opens, it moves the focus to the Control Panel.

If I use the Tasks view and eject a CD from D: or E:, the instant the tray
starts to open, Windows Explorer just closes.

Something's screwy.

This should be roughly the hierarchy of the Folders pane when in C:\

Desktop
[+] My Documents
[-] My Computer
.....[+] 3½ Floppy (A:)
.....[-] Local Disk (C:)
.........[+] Documents and Settings
.........[+] Program Files
.........RECYCLER
.........System Volume Information
.........[+] WINDOWS
.....[+] CD Drive (D:)
.....[+] CD Drive (E:)
.....[+] Control Panel
[+] My Network Places
Recycle Bin

Of course you will probably have more folders showing.

However, when a disk leaves D: or E:, the focus should go down to Control
Panel, not clear up to My Documents.
