It's a shareware utility for creating compressed files and opening them. you
can D/L an evaluation version at www.winzip.com which is fully functional, but
IIRC limited to a certain number of executions.

Almost, just reminds you how many times you have opened it :-)

I quit using WinZip and am using Zip Genius now.

Thanks, I paid for it so long ago I wasn't quite sure. Though I'm wondering if
perhaps up here in the Northern Hemisphere it reminds you how many times you've
closed it! <G>

No you don't. See below.

What is it?

A .zip file is a package containing one or more files in
(normally) compressed format. Winzip is a commercial product that
lets you create zip files to make your own such packages, and to
unzip them, restoring each individual file and uncompressing
them. It is only one of many programs that have this capability.
Although it's the most popular, it's far from the only choice,
and not necessarily even the best one. Personally I prefer
ZipMagic.

But with Windows XP, zip functionality is built-in and you don't
need any such product. Just double-click on the zip file and it
will open as if it were a folder.
