WINXP WMI not operative

Hi, folks.

I can't use disk defragmenter, I can't get a system restore beyond two days
ago, and all of my updates have been marked as "failed", despite having them
active some time ago. WORD 97 gives a messaage "cannot register this
document" when I start, and when I open any document that I've created in the
past.

The only thing I can think of is that I ran out of disk space and got a
"cannot set restore point" message on about five occasions in the last week
or two.

I've tried running WMI manaully, but I still cannot get defrag to work. I
cannot do a restore to before when the trouble started.

Any ideas?

What are the error messages or symptoms? Descriptions like "I can't use
disk defragmenter" and "cannot get defrag to work" are not helpful. I don't
think defrag requires WMI, why do you think this is a WMI problem?

OK. I open Defreg, select a drive, click on "Analyse". Nothing happens. Same
if I click on "Defragment".
Why pick on WMI - because lots of other stuff which seems to rely on WMI
also does not work (System info, which does give a specific error message),
and Word 97. All apps were working perfectly before this started.

Oops! Wes has nailed it - DCOM was disabled.

Thanks all,

Ian.
