System Info error "Cannot access the WMI software"

In addition, haven't been able to update Windows XP pro SP1 via Windows
Update due to unknown errors in months. Have worked with MS tech via email to
no avail.
Defrag won't work because it wants me to chkdsk. I schedule chkdsk but it
doesn't run on reboot.
Attempted a Windows Repair from MS XP Pro cd and it errored saying it
couldn't find a harddrive.
Attempted a System Restore and after all the gyrations, it could not restore
to two different restore points.
Following services are running: Event Log, WMI, and RPC.
Ran the wbemtest.exe on root/default and received this error:
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM>WMIC.EXE /RegServer
Please wait while WMIC is being installed.
Parsing Mof File: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\Cli.mof(Phase Error - 3)
Compiler returned error 0x80041001"

Other than that... pc is working.
It's a Dell Dim 8400, pent 4, 3.0 ghz, 2gb ram, Radeon x300

Have you tried reseting your WMI repository (I imagine you have - that
would have been one of the first things the MS tech would have recommended)?

Hi James,
If you meant by reset, to stop the WMI service, delete the repository
directory, restart the service and reboot..... yes. Done that a couple of
times and still no workee.

Right, well after you get past that, in my experience (talking with
engineers at Microsoft) the next thing they ask you to do is reinstall
the operating sytem (which usually fixes the problem a treat). Not a
super practical solution for some, but certainly less painful that
trying to find the root cause of the problem if you can do this.

James,

I was really hoping to not go down that road. I was really hoping that a MS
System Engineer would pop on and help me find the root cause of what ails my
computer. I have numerous applications installed on this machine, and to
reinstall Windows and then have to reinstall all of my software, and
reconfigure, would really be a pain in the rumplestilkens.

Reallly.... >:-O

Not sure if this will help you but I fixed a number of broken WMI
systems using this KB article. It does not really make sense that
this would break WMI but at least check it out. Good luck.

Turns out the solution to the problem was to run chkdsk /r from Windows
Repair. However, I could not access Windows Repair because it said it could
not find my hard drive. Dell uses ATA hard drives instead of IDE. The
Windows Install disk that Dell supplied with my computer, did not contain the
necesssary hard drive drivers for Windows to load prior to going to the
Repair option.

I had to have the ATA driver files copied over to a floppy ( thank goodness
I still get floppy drives on my new computers) and when I boot from Windows
install disk, press F6 to load additional drivers.

Once that happened, I was able to run chkdsk /r; it repaired something
although it never told me what... and I was then able to access System Info
and Defrag.

"You gotta love it....."
