WMI - DEFRAG - Other software

Hi, folks, XP SP2 problems suddenly appeared...

Tried to use DEFRAG as I have in the past, and it won't run (but it does if
I swap in the system drive with WIN98 mounted, so it's not a hardware fault).

If I try to use System Information, I get a message "A network error
occurred in connecting to Windows Management Instrumentation"

I used to be able to use Word 97 - now I get a message "This document cannot
be registered. It will not be possible - blah, blah, blah".

Tried to install Norton Ghost (which worked ok previously) but the "Windows
Installer is not properly configured".

Checking my Update list, all of them are now marked "Failed", where they
were previously OK.

Tried to Restore, but the oldest restore point is only about five days ago.

Only thing I can think of is, while running some large audio conversions, I
ran out of disk space maybe five times, getting a message that System Restore
"will not be able to establish a restore point"

HELP!

.... please.

Best regards,
Ian.

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze.

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click OK | Close Services |
Reboot

DCOM Server Process Launcher

[[ Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine

System Information (MsInfo32) will fail to work and give this error:
Can't Collect Information
A network error occurred in connecting to Windows Management
Instrumentation. Ensure that your network connection is functioning
properly. ]]

If that doesn't do it, see this.

If I try to use System Information, I get a message "A network error
occurred in connecting to Windows Management Instrumentation"

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
System Information (MsInfo32.exe) to work. See above.
