WinXP, VueScan preview, HP PhotoSmart S20

Hi all, I'm running WinXP ServicePack1 and I have an HP PhotoSmart S20
scanner connected via usb.

I have downloaded the preview edition of VueScan and I think I have a
problem.

I power up the scanner, I hear the ba-dink sound XP plays when it
recognizes new usb devices.

When I start VueScan it does not recognize that there is a scanner present.

Close VueScan.

I then startup the HP scanning software, let it initialize and then
imediately close it.

Now start VueScan again and it doesn't complain about not finding a
scanner, and seems to work ok from then on...

Is this a peculiarity of the HP PhotoSmart usb driver? ... of VueScan
preview? ... or is my system hosed?

thanks for any replies,
-Mark

Photosmart needs a firmware to be loaded into its internal memory
after powering on. HP software knows how to do it, Vuescan does not.
You have to run HP software every time you power on your scanner, and
only after that you can use Vuewscan. So it is a feature, which can be
annoying if you power off and on your scanner frequently.

The S20 has to be initialized with its own software before running Vuescan.
No big deal.
