WinXP version display

Open regedit and navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control
Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion. Change its value to 1. Close regedit and
reboot.
 
One way might be via TweakUI (for XP).

If this is not installed on your system, then download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Note: V2.10.0.0 needs Windows XP SP 1

If you do not have SP1, the earlier version of TweakUI can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe


In TweakUI, navigate to | General |

In the "Settings" box, scroll down to
[Y] "Show Windows version on desktop"
