since getting the latest windows XP auto-updates &
restarting my computer to enable the changes, it doesn't
boot-up.

i've tried starting windows nornmally, safe mode, safe
mode with networking & step-by-step & the same thing
happens everytime... in the case of starting normally, it
goes thru it's normal boot-up process until it gets to the
windows XP screen where the little blue status bar cycles
once, maybe twice & then freezes there & goes no further.
In the case of safe mode or any of the oprions (other than
starting windows normally)the computer goes thru it's
normal boot-up ritual (checks video card specs &
motherboard) but instead of going to the windows XP screen
with the little blue status indicator a bunch of text
lines scroll by (text to do with harware & settings in the
computer) & it freezes at the same line everytime.

now i am in a real jam here because this is my main
computer i use for work & it has been about 2 weeks since
my last back-up (i know... tsk tsk tsk). first thing i am
going to do today is get a boot disk made up from windows
98 on my laptop @ work & boot the computer into DOS mode &
see if i can view my C;/ drive & it's folders. if so i am
hoping as a worst case the files can be either transfered
to another partition i have on the computer (i have
several large paritons spread over 2 hard drives) & re-
install winXP.

however i am hoping i don't have to get that drastic &
there is some way to back out of the lastest updates that
seem to have cause this problem & that is really the basis
of this post. Long i know & I appreciate you for reading
this far.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem or have any good
ideas of how I can go back to the way the computer was
working fine before the updates?

thanx in advance & if this is posted in the wrong forum I
appologise I have poked around & this seemed like the best
first place to start.

Before doing anything, if the data for the past two weeks is critical
install the drive as a slave in another XP computer and copy off the data.

Do you know what update it was? SP2? If so see this link:

the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully

If not SP2 then try a repair install:
