Computer frozen

....on the words Preparing network connections. One time I fixed this by
unplugging internet cable and then later was able to plug it back in and all
was well. Now cannot do anything as it gets to this screen and then freezes.
Have tried making other commands before it gets there (control-alt-delete,
esc-windows key with every letter combination) but cannot do anything.
A few days ago when computer was working, tried doing a de-frag and it said
not enough memory to do one. Would like to be able to get to computer to free
up some memory in case this is part of the problem.

defrag memory usually
involves virtual memory.

so if the vm is too small,
defrag will not work.

to free up real memory,
ie ram, you might want
to take the following steps,
temporarily, so that you
can focus on the main issue
with networking.

click on start>run>msconfig

go to start tab and disable
everything, but make a note
of it/them.

then to to services tab, hide
all microsoft services,

then disable whats left and
jot these down too.

then reboot and test both
your issues, defrag and
networking.

btw: you should also do
the above for the other
pc's to ensure there are
nothing hindering your
efforts to network.

also, be sure to turn off
your firewalls too, until
you resolve the networking.

after you confirm a flawless
network, then attempt to
enable your firewalls and
av's and ensure they are
properly configured.

In Safe mode examine the System log for a normal mode boot and post
details of any warning and errors.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary
and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

i am trying this-turned everything off as instructed, defragging says not
necessary.
i am trying to get online now...okay that is working fine---so now i am
wondering what do i do next if that is what happened?

so you turned off
your unnecessary
startups and services
which free'd up more
physical memory, ie
ram.

next you stabilzed
you virtual memory
and now you don't
get warning messages
about "unable to do
a defrag" or "low virtual
memory".

now, what is the state
of your computer regarding
problems.

I am unclear as to what
ill affects you are now
experiencing....
