Frozen cursor

New problem, so let me ask a new question in this new group, Ater following
all the directions I so helpfully received on the Win newsgroup, I was
finally able to install SP2 on my Dell 8250, but as it opens, my cursor
freezes, and the only thing I can do is use Cntl-Esc and the keyboard to get
to System Restore -- at which point, of course, I am back to Win 2002, no
SPs.

Might anyone know how to overcome this "frozen cursor" problem and have both
a working cursor and WinXP Prof SP2 on my machine, please?

Thanks

It isn't actually that your cursor is frozen. It is that some program or
process or driver is failing. Since we don't have any description of
your computer or what caused the problem with SP2, I can't give you a
specific answer. I would do two things to start:

1. Start the computer in Safe Mode and see if it starts successfully
there. If yes, look in Event Viewer (Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]) to
see if there are clues about what is failing.

2. Do a clean boot:

Clean Boot in Windows XP

Then, if you are able to get into Regular Mode try enabling one thing at
a time to see which item is causing Windows to fall over.

Post back with more details after trying the above if you need more
help.

Malke,

Thanks for the effort, but what I get from eventvwr.msc is Greek to me, and
I can find no way of copying it to send to you. I will try the clean boot
site next.

OK, try the clean boot link and if you need more help, post back.
Because of your post, I assume you are not particularly tech-savvy (and
there is no shame in admitting that, you know) and so the most
productive thing to do might be to take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store).

Good luck,

Hi Malke,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I like to think that what I have screwed up,
I can unscriew. First, then, what should I be looking for as suggestinig
"failing" on the eventvwr.msc screen result? I will again try to follow up
with the rest of your ideas after this one. I am not especially techy, but I
have been at computers since KayPro and cp/m. I am also somewhat physically
handicapped, so getting this machine in and out of here poses a real problem.
If you are willing to keep helping, I am willing to keep trying. If you are
busy with other things, how about passing me on to someone with infinite
patience?

In Event Viewer, look for entries with red warning signs or yellow
exclamation points. Make a note of what they are. Do the clean boot.
