WinXP Stuck in re-start mode

I finally finished installing Windows XP home edition upgrade (after about 15
attempts over 7 days trying to get it to work including losing my whole hard
drive in the process). When I connected to the internet, it said that I had
some software updates to install. So I initiated the download and install
process. Everything went fine, then Windows says that inorder for these
updates to take effect I need to restart. Click ok for restart. Well, when
it restarts in brings up the loading Windows XP symbol with the line moving
accross the bottom, and then stops, and restarts again. And Again, and
again. It's stuck in the restart cycle. How can I A) stop the cycle, and B)
fix whatever happened to it.

When the reboot begins press key F8 thee or four times and select Safe Mode
and once logged-in click on Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System
Restore; in the restore program click on next and select the
date/restore-point from the calendar to before the updates and follow
indications on the program to restore your system to before the updates were
installed, and reboot in normal mode. The updated files are shown in the
System Restore calendar, so make a note of the numbers for later use and
once the system has been restored, allow the problematic updates to be
installed only one at a time, and once those have been installed you can
allow several at a time or as many as the system will allow without a
problem. I find it's easier on the computer to update it gradually instead
of updating bunches if files at a time, but once the troublesome updates are
in, you can try what ever method you prefer.
