WinXP stops recognizing my CD/DVD drives until I reboot

Here's a strange one.

I've got a WinXP SP2 machine with Nero 7 and lots of other stuff
installed. I have two IDE DVD-RW's and an Iomega USB CD-RW.

When I first boot the machine, I can read DVD's and CD's in any of the
drives, and also burn on any of them.

Then, after some operation with one of the optical drives, the whole
optical drive system seems to go unresponsive. I get the following
symptoms:
1 - Windows will no longer detect inserted discs. If I manually
double-click on the drive in "My Computer", Windows tells me to insert
a disc.
2 - If I try to burn a new disc with Nero, it will eject the tray...
asking me to insert a blank media. If I insert one, Nero just keeps
sitting there waiting, claiming that the drive is "Empty".

This condition will persist until I reboot the machine.

When I say it happens after "some" operation, I mean that Windows will
fall into this condition after a variety of things that I do with the
optical drives... and not *always* when I do them. For example:
1 - A couple of days ago, I was going through a bunch of unlabeled
CD-R's to see what I had burned onto them. I was able to insert and
look at the first 3 or so. The fourth one didn't register as being
inserted. I double-clicked the drive and I got a "Please insert..."
message. When I put in one of the previous 3 discs (which I had just
opened a few minutes previous), Windows now was unable to read them.
2 - Yesterday, I was burning several copies of a DVD-R. The first one
burned fine. When I inserted the next one, Nero claimed that it wasn't
blank, ejected it, and then was unable to recognize that I had inserted
anything after that.

Has anybody seen anything like this before?

I found this problem with my Sony drive. It was fixed with a firmware
upgrade. It might be worth a check to make sure that the firmware is
all up to date.

Also, make sure that you have all the Windows updates for CD burning,
including the optional ones.

HTH.
