DVD writer problems

I just upgraded from WIN98SE to XP - everything seemed to go fine - burned a
couple of CDs, everything OK. Then tried burning a data DVD on my TEAC drive
using Nero 6.33 just as I regularly did on 98.
Get a message up saying something like:
This task requires a DVD+R/RW or DVD-R/RW
Disc inserted is a DVD+R
Please insert a suitable disc.

Have tried various discs - won't accept a DVD+R. I tried it with a DVD+RW
and it seemed to work, but when it came to retreiving the data, had lots of
I/O errors.
Don't have any DVD-R to try, but will buy one next chane I get to try it.
Drive reads DVD discs burned last week under WIN98 no problems.
Any ideas ?
