WinXP slow to respond after boot up

Gavin

I've just installed WinXP Pro with SP1 (Athlon XP 1800, 256 DDR) and the
system is very slow to respond after the initial boot up. It takes around
1.5 - 2 minutes to open an application from launching it. It seems that a
process is still running during this time and consuming the system. I've
checked all of the start up programs and disabled them one by one, I've also
defragged the disk, but nothing so far has stopped it. Once this process has
finished the system runs fine. There is very little software installed on
the machine.

Can anyone provide any pointers for the next step in finding the cause of
this?

There are many reasons why this may be happening. First,
if you have any mapped drives to other computers, this
will slow the process if the other systems are not
connected. Then there is the virus protection ... which
may be set to run a scan upon startup. There is also
the "FastFind" indexing service that will also slow down
your system.

What applications do you have installed???
