WinXP Shell.DLL files

I had to re-load WinXP after a botched SP2 installation.
Now I can't download my printer software. Keep
getting "can't find SHELL.DLL. How can I down load just
what I need to continue?

Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection.

SHELL.DLL is a Microsoft Windows XP file and is not part
of the Epson
driver. The file should be in two key locations on your
system:

1. C:\WINDOWS\system
2. C:\WINDOWS\system32

If one of the above files is missing, SHELL.DLL errors
will likely result.
It is also important to note that in most cases, where
these errors have
resulted, the system has been upgraded to a Windows XP
version from a
previously released Windows operating system such as
Windows 98. We would
suggest seeking assistance from Microsoft, or your
computer vendor, as this
is clearly an operating system issue.

Shell is treated specially. It is and can be only loaded from system32 directory. Copy it there.

Actually on XP shell.dll should be in both c:\windows\system AND
c:\windows\system32.

Look in either of those directories and copy it to the directory that is
missing it. If you can not find it in either directory, then you may be
able to find it in c:\windows\system32\dllcache.

Am having same problem trying to install Epson multifunction driver -
question:
When you copied shell.dll from System to System32, was there an existing
shell.dll in System32??
