What will happen to all my files on my hard drive if I do a Recovery vs
Repair?

That depends on what you mean by Recovery. And, if you're referring to a
manufacturer's recovery CD, it also depends on what options you choose.
Some recovery processes set the drive back to factory specs, which is to
say, without your data and programs. Check the documentation.

I just did a restore w/ mfr CD, now computer doesn't recognize hardware like a wireless ethernet modem, or my touchpad. (laptop). Support & Help tools is messed up, lost all my HP/Compaq Support section. I don't know where to go. When help & support fails, and restore cd fails, not a lot of options avail...
--oh, restore was a full XP install on top of old one. All files lost.
that's ok.

There are basic drivers you haven't installed yet. Look for a drivers CD,
or go to the HP site with the details of your laptop and download the
drivers (use another sytem if you have to and burn them to CD). Then
install them.
