WinXP Pro Shutdown Oddity

When I go to Start>Shutdown> all screen color gradually
fades to a "soft" grayscale (like a color movie that is
presented in black and white). However, the menu window
that pops up and asks if I want to "Log Off" or "Shut
Down" or "Restart" retains it's normal coloring.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this situation.

That's normal... any XP install I've seen does the same thing.
