The very first question would be, how recent are your backups?

If they aren't very recent, and if you do actually care about your data, now
is the time to back it up. There are a number of ways to do so quickly
and reliably, including physically removing the drive, attaching it to
another system, and backing it up from there (after deleting the one or two
very large files in the root folder, and possibly the Temporary Internet
Files folders - which, by the way, may solve the problem).

A quick way is to use the Acronis TrueImage trial version to create a disk
image, which will often take well under an hour. You'll then have about
two weeks to fix the Windows install before you need to buy the package to
recover that data.

Backups? sorry.. this is a friends PC, i have an Acronis image from when i
originally installed it for him, but it is to old to restore now..
do you have any ideas what could prevent it from going past the login
screen? i didnt mention earlier it return to login box after 20 minutes or
so..
ps.. I think Acronis is great and use it often myself..
TIA
