WinXP Home <-- VPN --> Windows 2000 Workgroup

Jose Cordero

Hello, all.

My boss will be going on a trip to Florida (we're in
Puerto Rico) and we want her to be able to connect to the
office workgroup and access the shared resources. i
understand that VPN is my most probable solution.

The problem is that we would like to use the Internet as
the medium. How do I configure the VPN so that my boss'
WinXp Home through a DSL modem in Miami can connect to
the Win2k Pro computer in PR with DSL modem through which
the office NATs out to the Internet?

Also, we have the added wrinkle of having DHCP ip
addresses in the PR end (don't know about the Miami part,
though). Would this be a problem?

Any help, guidance or just plain warnings would be most
helpful.

It is certainly possible. The first thing to do is enable an incoming
connection on the W2k Pro. From a local LAN client, check that you can
establish a VPN connection to this machine's LAN IP. This will let you debug
any problems locally.

When this works, try to connect from the Internet using the machine's
public IP. (Try it from home if you have an Internet connection). In theory,
if this works, the connection should work from anywhere in the world, as
long as the user has a valid account with dialup permission.
