WinXP Home share problem

How do I tell XP Home to allow remote access by the Guest account? Does
anyone know the registry keys to check? Such access is supposed to be
available by default if File Sharing is enabled, and it used to work
just fine. But something changed, and now remote users cannot enumerate
or access shares on the XP Home computer.

The remote machines are configured as they should be. The home network
itself is working fine, in a sense, because the XP Home machine can
access shares from any other computer in the network. But the XP Home
machine won't return the favor. The error is, "Logon failure: the user
has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

(I posted a similar question a while back, worded differently, and I was
advised to consult to Hans-Georg Michna's site. Mr. Michna's site is
impressive and loaded with useful information, and I will certainly be
directing others to his network troubleshooter, which is well-designed
and undeniably helfpul. Alas, I could not find a solution to my
particular problem. I'd already eliminated the more obvious sources of
trouble (e.g., by making sure the Guest account was running on all
machines, by verifying that NetBIOS over TCP was enabled, etc.). And
some of the permission-specific suggestions on the web site make use of
policy editors accessible only in XP Pro, not in XP Home.)

I've noticed that other people are having the same problem. For example,
just a few days back Paul Nancarrow posted a thread titled "User not
granted requested logon type" in which he laid out the same problem I'm
experiencing in my home network.

Thanks!

Brian,

I thought we had cleared this up already, but maybe it was not
fully formulated.

I suppose that some third party software has changed the policy,
probably added Guest to the list of users that are denied
network address. As Windows XP Home Edition does not have the
policy editor, there is no simple way to change it back, and I
know of no way. I even searched the registry, but I couldn't
find the policies. They may be stored somewhere else or in an
inaccessible part of the registry, like the SECURITY hive.

If I remember correctly, I proposed to uninstall the third party
software, in the hope that this would undo the change as well.

My first guess is that it's something from Norton/Symantec, but
it could be something else. McAfee or ZoneAlarm perhaps. These
companies are known for some very sloppy and dangerous
programming.
