WinXP hangs for no reason, please help

(I posted this first under help & support but due to lack of responses
i’m reposting it here, sorry about the doublepost)

I have WinXP Prof. with Service pack 2 installed on my laptop
(Thinkpad A31 ). The computer has been working fine for months after
SP2 was installed but now it hangs up (display and keyboard) after
some time (varies from 5mins to 45mins) and I cannot do anything but
restart the computer.

IF I plug in a USB mouse though this problem does not occur.

Things I have tried so far are: reduced hardware acceleration,
switched off and on system restore, uninstalled and reinstalled
network cards (the computer has a regular and a wireless card in it),
reinstalled software for trackpoint. I have updated all the drivers as
far as I can tell. In the safe mode I DO NOT see this problem.

This problem only started a few weeks ago and I’m at my wits end and
would appreciate any suggestions.

thanks in advance

Hi,

Hangs can be caused by a number of things, but if you've determined that it
does not happen in Safe mode, then the logical conclusion is that it is
being caused by something loading on a normal boot. You need to isolate it,
and these can help:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP [Q310560]

Do not assume that any one particular thing "could not possibly be the
problem", as it may very well be.
