WinXP getting very slow

I'm using Win 98SE but......

A couple of weeks ago, a co-worker told me that her WinXP system was getting very slow, so I suggested she empty her IE cache and do a defrag and see what happens.

Seems it had a bit of a good result, but today she again commented that her computer was slow again and that she thought she might do a re-format to clear out the junk and see what happens.

I said I would ask here for her, so has anyone got a Top Five list of things to do to pick up the speed of the computer? (simple language please)

P.S. I don't think she has installed any service packs, so I suppose thats one possibility, but any other suggestions appreciated

TIA

Get AdAware and Spybot S&D and their updates and run them. Clean out temp
files and defrag.

If she is going to re-format and re-install, she needs to enable the XP
firewall before she goes online or she will be infected with nasties before
she has time to install anything. Then she needs to install virus protection
and all the updates.
