Are you back to IE6 or running IE7 beta ?
Provide details on the "freeze" at windows update. Is it at the welcome or initial screens? does it complete the scan & then show choices for selection? is it at the download phase? or install phase?

Also, have you looked into the contents of your update log?

Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note, and see some info.

Use Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

(note your Windows folder may be at \Windows)

Scroll down all the way. You are looking for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ...... are numbers)
See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

At the time of this posting I ran a thing called Full Service-Microsoft
Internet Explorer........while it did a fix another problem I had I still
cannot update windows.

I am back on IE6 running winXP Home edition/sp2

It freezes as soon as the box comes up with downloading/installing
bars....except nothing starts to d/l and I have to get task manager to close
it or reset the computer.

In the history updates it's showing errors since March 17 which according to
the log is one week after d/l Windows Defender...........The error code:
0x8024402C, Installation Failure.

As for using wordpad and opening the file.....I'ld rather not as I'm not
that familiar with it......I even have a hard time with winzip sometimes.

Any more thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

See the section with heading "0x8024402C or 0x8024502d error codes" in the following MS article
You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883821

Follow the article's suggestion. Logoff & reboot the system before going to Windows Update again.

Are you in a network setup? using a proxy server? a stand-alone pc?

Wordpad is very easy to use. From Start menu, select RUN option, then type in worpad and press ok.
