WinXP Firewall

O Noah

Is anyone familier with Sygate Personal Firewall, ver. 5.6 ?
It is free for home use.

I have been using ZoneAlarm for a long time, but the version
6.0.667 is not behaving properly on my gateway PC running
Win XP Pro, (although it works OK on the 2nd PC), I am
looking for another bi-polar firewall for the gateway PC.

Appreciate any comments.

I use Sygate at home, but I prefer ZoneAlarm. (I have two pcs, one with
ZoneAlarm and the other with Sygate.)

You say that ZoneAlarm isn't behaving properly. If you are using the pc as a
gateway - and by this I assume you mean that it has internet connection
sharing - then the personal/free version will block internet connection
sharing and you'll have to use the full version.

I don't know whether Sygate Personal Firewire exhibits the same behaviour.
Why not download it and see?

You might find that you'll get a better response if you try posting to
either comp.security.firewalls or alt.comp.network.firewalls, both of which
are newsgroups devoted to firewalls.

Brian,

You are absolutely right. I am having the same problem with Zone Alarm.
I have been familier with ZoneAlarm since 2002, but recently they have changed
their policy, where the TCP/IP signal does not pass through the gateway PC
(in the free version). Although I was an avid customer for Zone Alarm for four
years, I cannot afford to pay now. That is why I am looking for an alternative.
The Sygate Personal version does behave well, but it is somewhat complicated to
setup. Infact, version 5.6 is working well. I am still looking for an easier one.
Thank you so much.

Thank you for the info. I am aware of the built-in XP firewall, but
I could not figure out any easy way, what it is blocking or what it did
allow to pass through.

I will definitely play with the AppWall firewall.
Thank you so much.

O Noah

| Since you are using XP you already have a firewall. What you need is
| a per-process traffic switch, see AppWall at

| Good luck!
