WinXP facility for dragging files to folder

R

Roy

Hello group
Among the faults that resulted in the WinXPSp3 installationa and
uninstallation was the facility to drag files to the folder. I want to
know how to regain that capability with my PC. I have done the clean
boot but have not observed that recovery of that important facility.
Can anybody tell me about to regain that function?
TIA

Click Start, Run and type the following (pressing Enter key after each one).

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Or try this:

Line #233 - Enable Drag and Drop

Thanks Elmo, but I did try running the given registry keys one after
the other but it did not work..
I am reluctant to follow the kellys corner as likely its the same as
the first step?.....
Any more ideas?

Try Kelly's fix. It specifically targets the Drag and Drop feature
whereas the re-registering of the mentioned files is for Copy/Paste
problems in general.

Line 233. (r-h column) Enable Drag and Drop

Thanks, but unfortunately the there is aproblem with kelly corner,
although I can access its website I can't connect to the tweaks...Http
400 bad request.
I am thinking of doing the aumha tool first, but there was no
direction for backing up the registry in WinXP only for win95,98,2000?
I had also tried looking at the task bar , right click task
bar>properties>uncheck the lock the taskbar> clicktab start menu>
customize> advanced tab>start menu items> check enable dragging and
dropping... but it did not sort the problem..
I had been trying to access the Kelly XP tweak since yesterday but
can't get to it. Hope it will improve later...
I let you know what happens .....

Here's the information you should have had before attempting to install SP3:

How to troubleshoot an unsuccessful installation of WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950718

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

The free unlimited installation and compatibility support for WinXP SP3
has been extended (but certainly not indefinitely) beyond the original
14 April 2009 cut-off date. Open your browser to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select
Windows XP | select Windows XP Service Pack 3

But the fact that you can't access the tweaks at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm makes me wonder if you
picked up malware before, or since the SP3 install. Have you run any
checks recently? Many types of malware will prevent access to
particular sites, disable features, and prevent updates to current
protection. If you think that's a possibility, try these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

SuperAntispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

If you can't get the downloads, try downloading to another machine, save
to a thumb drive, then install on your machine.

Hello Elmo
I am protected by Kaspersky Internet security 2009 ...
Recently
I was able to connect to t he Kelly tweaks and able to get to #233,
but there was no change on my problem....
I still can't use the drag and drop option
I did the same thing manually a suggested by Daave in a thread Is
'WinXP Sp3 update necessary'
Or you can just manually change the registry, using these values:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\Advanced]
"Start_EnableDragDrop"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
\Explorer]
"NoChangeStartMenu"=dword:00000000

but did not result in changes...
What could be the problem?

Try disabling the Kaspersky firewall and/or any other software that
could be blocking or altering Desktop and Explorer functions. Even IE
is closely associated with Windows functions, e.g., ActiveX commands.

Sorry, no other ideas.. But you can do a Google search for other
suggested solutions.
