.. go to "my computer" and browse the DVD from there, are you saying
that there's nothing on the DVD?

perhaps I misunderstand you, but from what you've written, it seems to
me that cd autorun has nothing to do with it.

regarding what you call 'autorun'
do you mean cd autorun (works for dvds too no doubt)? It's not
specific to win xp . I think cd autorun just runs autorun.inf
http://theeldergeek.com/cd_autorun.htm
but perhaps if there's no autorun.inf it browses the DVD. Either way,
it makes no difference here.

Thanks q_q,

I realize my description of "autorun" was vague. I'm referring to the
options window that pops up in winxp whenever a cd or dvd is inserted
and presents a list of applications to use for opening whatever is on
the media.

not sure. But more importantly, can you play the DVD? e.g. load WinDVD
or PowerDVD or even VideoLAN(a free program), and do file..open and
browse to it.

note-VideoLAN is an all rounder. It's might not be so ideal for DVDs,
but it does view them. And the interface is slim and intuitive.

My DVD is broken so I can't try this. But to get the terminology right
for that window you speak of. I would ge the window up, see what it
says at the top, in the title bar, and the window itself, and google
based on that. And of course report back , especially if you solve it

Hi q_q_anonymous,

Thanks for your answer.

I can play any dvd after starting WinDVD or any cd if loaded with Media
Player.

The window that pops up is the one suggesting a number of possible
applications to play the disc. In my case it suggests nothing. The
title of the window is "Mixed Content" in that case. The message
(always the same) is "Windows can perform the same action each time you
insert a disc or connect a device with this kind of file". There's
also an option to "Always do the selected action".

Great. Here are some things to consider..

Open up regedit, and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
Look for the key 'AutoRun', and toggle between 1 for 'Enable' and 0 for
'Disable'

Go to "my computer"...Right click CD drive...properties...AutoPlay...
You see the options listed? perhaps yours is empty there.
See the "Restore defaults" button
Click "select an action to perform" Now that "restore defaults" button
is enabled.
Click that.

I don't have easy access to a CD , so can't test this. But maybe that
will work.

refs- google windows cd autorun "mixed content"
(somebody there mentioned somethign about autorun being
greyed out. Also noticed people calling it autoplay)
google groups autoplay "greyed out"

perhaps it's called autoplay in the Windows GUI, and autorun in the
registry. I don't know how it's related to the old running the
executable in Autorun.inf
