WinXP automatically installs my old video drivers!!!!! on reboot.

I am trying to install the latest nVidia video drivers on
my WinXP Pro system. Whenever it reboots to complete the
uninstall, it automatically installs the drivers I just
uninstalled!!! I have always been able to manually
install my drivers in Win98SE and Win2000 but not in
WinXP. I am getting error messages (blue screen) and I
have a feeling it's my video card and SBLive sound card
that are conflicting. I updated the SB drivers and can't
seem to do a clean install of my video drivers. When I
installed the latest sound drivers, I got rid of the
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error but now have a
Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area. I am assuming it's my video
drivers that are causing the problem. Does anyone know
how to stop WinXP from automatically installing the
drivers, so I can properly install the video drivers?
Thanks.

Generally, if a driver fails to install, it can be assumed that the driver
is not the right one for the device being used..

It's not failing to install. When I uninstall the
drivers and the computer needs to reboot to complete the
uninstall, WinXP automatically installs the drivers
again. I do not have an option where I can tell it to go
to where I want to get the new drivers. After XP
installs its drivers I can install my new drivers but
then that's not a clean install, is it? I don't know why
you can't go to a standard VGA mode like you used to be
able to. Is there a way to go to standard VGA mode in
WinXP (the last time I tried, there wasn't an option for
that).

No,

Just install the new drivers (from nVidia, not MSU)
over the top of the old ones,
no particular need (or method) to uninstall old ones.
