Winword.exe *is* Microsoft Word. Have you installed Word on your
computer?
If you expected Windows XP, to come with Word, sorry to tell you
that neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has
ever included Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or any other
significant application software. Such programs have to be
bought, either by themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.
If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows,
came with Word, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled it
(or Microsoft Office) as part of the package he sold you, not
because that version of Windows came with it. Some, but not all,
vendors do the same with Windows XP.

Reinstalling word should put the file back. Did you try searching for it? Or
try uninstalling office/word completely, reboot, then reinstall.

sorry, i guess i wasn't clear. I have no problem opening
word. instead it's opening documents in other folders ie
with an icon. I have reinstalled office - same problem.
The issue doesn't arise with excel... i know that
winword.exe is word, but it keeps telling me that it
doesn't exist. furthermore, when i serch for it either
on my system or on the office cd it is not found. I'm
guessing the issue is not with office or word, but rather
with windows

The statements "I have no problem opening word" and "when i serch

contradictory. If you can open Word, the file can't be missing.
When you try to click on a .doc file, exactly what happens?

Use your Word Cd to re-install Word.
