WINS, XP and browsing shares

So, with Windows Server 2000 and 2003, the only real reason to keep WINS is
because Browse in XP STILL uses it! Most books I have found on Server say,
if you aren't using Browse, you can ditch WINS. Now, the fact that ANY part
of XP still requires WINS is lame to start with, but maybe I am even lamer.
Because I am not sure how one could function without Browse. Do you just use
nothing but mapped drives? I know you can publish a directory of AD shares,
but do you need to install an app to actually look thru those shares? And if
you do dump WINS, is there any way to REMOVE My Network Places so users
don't go there and have it not work?

Best,
Gordon

Are you answering a previous post? If so, since you didn't post to the
same thread or include references, we don't know if this is a
continuation or new question.

In any case, you don't need WINS unless you have an NT4 server on your
network. None of my clients' Win2k servers, Win2003 servers, or my own
mixed network use WINS. Perhaps you could describe your network and the
problems you're having to get more specific help.

No, just starting a post poorly. My very British Education mother would be
dissapointed ;)

Current setup is WinXP Pro workstations and Win2000 Server running DNS and
WINS. We tried without WINS and Browsing via Network Neighborhood didn't
work. Consultant said install WINS, and indeed, it worked. I have been
looking at books on Win2k3 Server, and all say that Browse the Network
requires WINS, but offers no info on what other way one might get around the
network.

So, the goal would be a WINSless Win2k3 domain, with the ability to go see a
list of shares available. I can see a list of Printers available, but other
than Network Neighborhood, how do you see a list of shares?

Perhaps you've got dns set up incorrectly. You should have one dns
server (it can be the same as your pdc if you've only got the one) with
forwarding zones set up for the Internet connection. The server should
look to itself for dns and all workstations should look to the server.
Set the workstations and server to look to the gateway for Internet
access. If you've got resources shared out on the server, they will
show up in Network Places on the workstations. You might want to post
in the server group - the regulars there are wizards. Try
microsoft.public.windows.server.general.
