Hi all,

I've a user with a set of logon scripts that map persistent drives to
hidden ($) shares on an SBS2003 server.

When he logs onto the LAN as normal (wired or wireless), then the
scripts run and mount the drives and all appears ok. He then chooses
various files and folders for offline access on those shares.

However, when he starts up and logs on outside the LAN, off-line, those
persistent drives don't appear. If he views the Offline file cache,
they are all there, so its just the drive mapping that seems to be the
problem.

He has two other shares on the same server, which aren't hidden, and
these remain assigned with no problems.

In the event log, I do see an entry about 1054
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840669) and
then I see messages about not being able to access the logon scripts
that mount the drives.

I've applied the reg-hack in the article, and I'm waiting to see what
happens, but I'm wondering if anything else could be the cause. Maybe
XP can't keep hidden shares mapped ??

"he starts up and logs on outside the LAN, off-line"

He cannot execute the login script if he doesn't login to the domain.
How can you expect the drives to map under these conditions? It's not a
timeout problem as the KB addresses.

Yes,

So why does XP log the fact it can't run the domain scripts in the event
log ? (why would it even be trying to if it can't talk to the DC ?)

A.

It doesn't know it can't talk to the DC until after it tries to.
