WINS and multiple IP addresses

I have a strange issue on a 2003 Small Business Server.

The server has two IP addresses in different ranges, 192.168.254.x and
128.0.0.x. All services should be binding to the 192.168.x.x address but
WINS seems to be working from 128.0.x.x. Even if I put both of the server IP
addresses in the WINS servers box on the clients, they cannot browse the
network. Neither can my server browse the network, it says 'the list of
servers in the workgroup was unavailable'.

I can't disable WINS because I have NT clients. My NT clients won't log onto
the domain, I can't create a computer account on the server for them as it
says the username/password is wrong when I enter the admin authentication
details.

I believe this is all linked and all to do with a conflict in WINS but I
don't know how to resolve it. WINS doesn't seem to function properly on
either address range. I suppose one answer is to remove one of the IP
addresses from the server but this has all sorts of other implications.

I replaced an NT server with this 2003 server. The NT server had the same
two IP addresses and everything functioned normally on it.

Has anyone seen this before?

Many thanks,

Jane

i'm assuming you have only one nic - become a multi-honed server (ie. dual
nics).... i'd take the server offline, remove the other ip address, restart,
ensure WINS is working properly, add another nic in and remove the service
from responding on that card... that should fix things..

Multihomed SBS is a big problem and virtually multihomed SBS is a bigger
problem. Try to add a physical NIC for the 128... address and unbind WINS.
Actually, unbind everything...

In addition to the other post,..you also need to set the 192 nic as the
first priority nic.

Network Place-->Properties-->Advanced (from top menu)--> Advanced
Settings-->Adapters and Bindings--> adjust the list in the Connections box.

Thank you all for your advice. There is a disabled NIC in the server so I
will give it a go.

Any ideas why NT was happy with both IP addresses on the one NIC but not
2003? Just curious.

I don't think it ever should have worked. You don't put multiple addresses
on a NIC unless they are the same subnet. One exception would be a
specialized NIC used for VLANs where it can separate traffic by the "Frame
Tag" using the VLAN ID.

Here's the greneral rule for multiple IP#s,...if the IP#s are differnt
subnets use separate Nics for each, it the IP#s are the same subnet then use
them on the same NIC.
