WINS and LMHOSTS

Hi folks,

I am new to Wins and the use of the LMHOSTS file.

Here is the situation...

My company has a small network consisting of:
1 Windows 2000 Server

6 Windows 2000 Pro clients

4 Windows 98 clients

Everything is fine on the Win 2000 clients, but the Win 98 clients
cannotget out to the internet even though they can see the rest of the local
network.

The Win 2000 server is setup to do DNS and DHCP.

Now, Please correct me if I am wrong.

* The Win 98 machines must use WINS instead of DNS.

* Since the Win 98 machines are using WINS, they need an LMHOSTS file.

* The LMHOSTS file should be created in the C:\windows directory of each
of the Win 98 machines

Please point me in the correct direction.

In order to get to the internet, your clients need DNS not WINS.
Be sure they are configured with DNS server entries. You can do this in your
dhcp scopes..

Thank you,

The Win 98 machines are configured to 'look' at the Win 2000 server for DNS
information AND the Win 2000 server IS set up to do DNS services... which it
does for all of the Win 2000 Pro clients. When any of the Win 98 machines
attempt to get to the internet, they give me a DNS error. A buddy of mine
told me that the 98 machines needed WINS instead of DNS. That did not sound
right to me either. What am I missing?

Do an nslookup on a win98 machine and post the results. You may need to
download nslookup for win98 - can't remember.
