Winodws East Transfer Dell XP to HP Vista - How to make it run?

Hello,
Following on screen instructions, I transfered the software module to a
thumb drive on the new HP Vista and inserted the thumb drive into the old
Dell XP laptop. I started the module but it only ran for a few minutes and
then stalled without any sign of activity or any screen window appearing. I
couldn't terminate it either. In desperation, I opened the task menu and shut
down three related processes which was the only way I found, with my limited
know-how, to get out of the jam.

Can any one please help so that I can transfer my settings and files from
the old machine to the new?

I still prefer to transfer data by mem stick, cd or external drive.
And manually redo my preferred settings in Vista.

Thanks, Mike. I will read the reference right away. Sorry for my
mis-spelling the words. Do you know if there is a way to copy the file that
contains all the user names and associated passwords that have been saved by
IE? Thanks again.
