Winmgmt.exe fails to start

Folks, Can you help. My son accidentally hit the reset button on his PC
yesterday (W2K sp4). Upon reboot an error window pops up every minute saying
the prog Winmgmt.exe cannot start (or similar spelling).

Now I have gone into the services, found the service to do with the prog
(WMI or something like that) and changed the service so that it doesn't try
to restart every 60000milliseconds, as was the default. Also, as suggested
somewhere on the MS support webby, I deleted the winmgmt.cfg file (in
C:\WINNT\system32\wbem\Repository) as it was suggested that it was this
"corrupted" file that could be at fault.
The PC created a new one on reboot, but once again if I don't disable the
service it continues to get the errors every minute.

Any thoughts?

TIA

Hi,
I don't know what the file does, but I do know that after deleting the
file the OS recreates it on reboot successfully.

I am having trouble with boot up. When booting I get an error message
that the 1st allocation is not valid for
\WINNT\system32\wbem\Repository\$WiinMgmt.CFG. I cannot successfully boot
and was wondering if you had any ill effects from deleting your file? Do
you know what this file does?
