WinME to WinXP Pro

T

Tom

I'd like to install WinXP Pro over my WinME system.
1) Can I do this and not have any installation or residual
issues later on?
2) What folders on the WinME system should I backup or
rename so that they still are existing in the WinXP Pro
system?

I currently have a 1GHz; 60GB drive with 512MB RAM. I
think I have about 10GB free. What's the minimum
installation requirements?

Yes, I'm aware that my WinME programs won't carry over to
WinXP Pro until they're reinstalled, but what else do I
gain or lose?
TIA,
Tom

Tom,

To answer the other part of your question.

A clean install is always preferred, assuming the following:
- You have a prior OS CD that will be recognized as "qualifying media" for
the WinXP Upgrade to work. Recovery Disks supplied with some name brand
machines may not allow you to do this.
- You back up everything of importance in advance to removable media (Jaz,
Zip, CD, tape, etc.) so you restore your data when you are done.

An upgrade over WinME WILL result in "residue" and may result in later
instabilities. This is a potential problem with any upgrade (vs. clean
install).
