Windows Mail is free
Outlook will cost you.
Windows Mail is no longer supported.
Outlook is supported.
For typical home emailer, Windows Mail does the job.
For the business owner, Outlook is more likely the choice.

In addition, Microsoft has indicated that the newer Windows Live Mail
program is the replacement for Windows Mail:

Mike,
It depends on what you wish to do and how much additional features are necessary.

Outlook is my preferred email client for pop3 accounts and business use.

I use Windows Live Mail for hotmail type accounts(hotmail.com, live.com, and msn.com) where I desire synchronization of messages
and folders with the server. I discontinued use of Windows Mail except for use as an occasional newsreader.

Outlook is significantly more configurable and capable than Windows Mail(or its replacement Windows Live Mail), thus is is also
more complex and has a much higher learning curve.

Actually see the following and Outlook now has a fix for the OL 2000 wab issue in
Vista which was the only problem with it before. 2002 is the only one from the above
which still has a single issue which is the password
