WinMail no longer remembers server password

P

Peter Meinl

Windows Mail suddenly forgot the passwords of my email and news accounts and
does no longer remember them.
If I reenter them and check "Remember Password" it works fine for the
current session but Windows Mail asks again at the next start.

Go in and set it again under Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers
and see if that fixes it.

Otherwise remove the account, close WinMail and reopen it, and then add it
back again and see if that fixes it.

That does not help.
WinMail has already forgotten the password when it tries to connect to the
server the first time directly after recreating the account.

I don't know how you'd fix this. You can look at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...outlookexpress/oe/overviews/account_entry.asp
where there is a discussion of the new way WinMail handles account data. It
is stored in an XML file with the file extension .oeaccount Your mail
account files will be listed in the message store under the local folders
tree. I would suggest you delete the mail oeaccount file and then run
WinMail and set up the account again. Then see if it remembers the
password. The message store location is found via Tools | Options |
Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder.

Otherwise I don't know what it would be causing the problem.

This did not help too.
Thank you for your assistance.

Do you know where one can report Vista bugs?
I have another nasty one with file_management and do not know how to let MS
know about it.

Here the content of new .oeaccount file created by WinMail with "Remember
Password" checked.
It obviously did not store the password and is configured to prompt.

Thanks for that, but I don't know what to do to fix it. It may be something
with the German version of Vista if that is what you are using, or a 3rd
party program interfering.

cheers,

Steve's link to how WinMail accounts work made me look around. My "local
settings" is a shortcut and I can't access it even as administrator. The
security settings are set but greyed out and I can't change them. I did an
upgrade from Xp, don't know if that's relevant.

Well I solved it. A clean install rather than update. Looks as though the
update is naff now MS has dumped Outlook Express.

this also started to happen on my pc today - luckily someone has posted a
solution to this in another thread (go back to list of threads and look for
one that starts "Steve Cochran: please help..." and the solution is posted by
Leland. It worked for my PC... or it's working for now at least!...
