Winmail - Messages in Inbox and Outbox can't be deleted?

I have noticed several postings about winmail not allowing people to delete
certain messages. I am having this problem too.

I followed the thought that maybe McAfee might be causing the problem and
unistalled it. I am still having the problem. And I have since noticed yet
another problem.

I was trying to send my grandmother an e-mail and instead of it showing
sent, it keeps coming up with a blank error on sending and it is still
showing as unsent in my outbox. However, I just got a reply from my
grandmother from the supposedly unsent message still showing my my outbox.

I realise everyone is having similar problems but nothing seems to be quite
like mine. Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem too,
or if I am the only one.

I also would like to note that my mail was fine until I tried to block two
spammers e-mails at the same time. Winmail froze, then I realised I couldn't
do anything with those two e-mails and later realised it was more than just
those two. Anyways, just thought I should mention that as it is different, I
believe than what others posted and thought it might add to someone being
able to solve this problem.

Initially I tried to reboot and obviously that didn't make any difference.

Please, any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

There is no "fix" at the moment.

You can try compacting and repairing the database using my WMUtil program
(www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/).

After that, the only solution so far is to wipe out the database. So go to
Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder to find the message
store location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to
another directory, so that the Windows Mail directory is completely empty.
Then restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing
in the database. You can then add your accounts and if they work correctly
then you can drag messages from the directory to which you moved the files
back into WinMail.

Can you help or tell me were to find more directions on moving windows mail
directory to another location?

I understand the steps to "store location" but then how exactly do you
move everything.

FYI I spent 4hours on the phone with dell and paid the money to fix this
promble and now the problem is back. Have a call into dell but would like to
try and fix. I can not send out anything!! I am having to use my backup
email through time warner.

My computer is also brand new and have nothing but problems with this email
stuff very frusterated.

Thanks for the help.

Make sure Windows Mail is closed.
Then, if you have McAfee or Norton totally uninstall it.
Then open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft
Drag the Windows Mail to Documents. Wait a fairly long time until it
finishes.
Now you can open Windows Mail and import from the old folder that you moved.

Steve,

Will this preserve my e-mails or will I lose them? I would like to know so I
can back them up again.

Thanks,

Frank,

Just like with Steve's post, I am worried about losing the mail I have. Will
this delete my messages, or should I back them up first?

Thanks,

My daughter sent out our "ghost" email, as they seem to be called, on the
12th of April, it too had arrived at its destination but fouled up my Windows
Mail.
Here is what I did, which may be a bit more lengthy than what most people
need to do due to the Vista user problems my version has. Most people should
be able to go to Computer, C Drive, Users, select their user name, and see
the AppData file from there, and I cannot.

I went to start
in the start search area (just above start) I entered C:\Users\my user
name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail (note that Windows Mail must be
written as two separate words)
I clicked on Windows Mail at the top of the list page
I selected WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and pasted a copy in my documents
(just in case)
then deleted the file
I opened the Backup folder
then Opened the New folder
Deleted the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore in this folder
Closed out of everything and then upon opening Windows Mail it restores
itself and also gives you several "restore" folders under the default folders.
I then proceeded to input my emails into the folders by copy and pasting (I
did notice a note online while searching that stated it is not a good idea to
copy and paste several emails at once as this action can cause another
"ghost" email, it also stated that doing anything too fast can cause this
problem.)

I hope this helps. I am more than happy to save anyone and everyone from
having the problems I've had.

Thanks CF.

I wish it was that simple.

I can see all my files. I wonder if you had hidden files not showing as an
option. Usually in windows you can't see them unless you enable them. It's a
default setting on newer versions of windows. Earlier versions allowed
everyone to see them, as I remember, without having to ask to be shown them.
That created problems for novice users and I imagine that is why Microsoft
opted to change how everyone views hidden files.

Anyways, that was just my thought about why you couldn't see the appdata file.

I can see all of my files, I just can't delete ANY e-mails, etc.

And if there are problems moving multiple e-mails at a time, then I have a
real problem. I have 2 years worth of e-mails saved on my computer at this
point. Some of them I can afford to lose, some I cannot. But that amounts to
thousands of e-mails. I have left them as a backup. There are many
Genealogists that I have had infrequent contact with, due to the nature of
Genealogy that I still need to be in contact with and I need copies of their
e-mails in order to interact intelligently.

I do appreciate the help and I'm sure it would work, but I just don't have
time to move all those e-mails one at a time. Nor do I have time to do it
slow as a snail.

So thank you very much and I'll keep this in mind. But I think I'll wait a
bit longer to see if someone comes up with a fix so I don't have to keep
doing this in order to keep my mail. Someone mentioned doing something
similarly, but shortly after doing it, they had to do it again...........

I've been receiving my mail mostly. I turned off automatically checking for
mail and notified the people I have sent messages to that they will
undoubtedly receive an occassional copy of the e-mails I have sent but that
it isn't a virus. And I have opted to send most of my e-mail through my
webmail account until this blows over...... :)

You would think that having this MAJOR problem with a program like this,
would be cause for alarm. And considering how long this has been a problem, I
would think it would be a considerable amount of alarm 6 months or more out.

If I was Microsoft, a few heads would roll on this. Why couldn't they just
keep Outlook Express or Outlook? What was wrong with those? They worked fine
for me. :)

I agree! I think they should have fixed this problem long ago. Microsoft told
me a week ago that most people are using live mail and that Windows Mail is
only for those not as familiar with the updated versions of live mail
available to us. I personally do use live mail but liked my Outlook Express
very much and used it regularly too.
As for the "hidden files" we did all the normal searches and no one can seem
to find things where they should be on this system and that was out of the
box. I hope that the new boot disk I am due to receive will be better.
Thank you and I wish you luck.

Hi,
Indded one of the most painfull bugs in Mail is the lack of capacity to
remove corrupted information from the index.

If you have a ghost message in your outbox and you are unable to delet it,
then you have no solution more than exporting the mail in your folders delet
your storage folder and reload everything into mail.

As most Vista features, Mail is still a Beta like product plenty of bugs
like this one
