Winlogin.exe is jumping between 15% and 75% processor
usage. The machine is slowing right down and won't even
let me shut down XP. I have had the task manager running
to see what is causing it. It is when start up 3d studio
Max that the problem starts. I have tried uninstalling
and re-installing but this doesn't remedy the problem.

Are you sure the process is winlog*in* and not winlog*on* (as in your
subject)? Winlog*in* is a virus. Do a scan with a current antivirus
program, using updated definitions.
