I am mad, very mad, but lets see if we can fix this problem with windows
defender.

Last night I was minding my own business when I got a popup asking if I
wanted to upgrade to windows defender. Because I love microsoft anti spyware
I did. The application seemed to hand so i resrated my computer which ran
chkdsk and deleted a bunch of files.

I am now totally unable to boot into windows. I get a message that
winlogon.exe was unable to locate a component. It then adds "the application
has failed to start becasue comctl32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the
application may fix the problem. When I click OK I get:

The logon user interface Dll msgina.dll failed to load. Contact system
administrator to replace the DLL or restore the original DLL.

Can I reinstall the files from my dell restore disk? I can't even boot to
my CD drive (yes I made sure it was configured correctly in the bios). What
is going on. Can anyone please help????

This is an issue which is probably going to need someone on the phone to
fix. Can you call us at 1-866-234-6020 (Windows XP Home) and speak to our
setup team.

I am on hold right with MS. Apparently I cannot get to your department. I
have a case # of SRX060427603985. The guy wants me to boot into safe mode
and I cannot even get past this message. Now he is saying it is a virus. He
won't let me talk to your department.

I am unable to boot into windows at all so some of the resolutions are not
working. I cannot even boot into safe mode. When I do I get the message re
comctl32.dll ...... after I click OK I get msgina.dll message Apparently all
I need to do is install msgina.dll but if I can't boot into the desktop or
even safe mode, how do I do it?

Can you ask for a call-back on the first incident, and try the number Steve
gave out?

That's not a speedy process, but it isn't necessarily destructive--this
depends, however, on the kind of installation media you have. I believe
with Dell's systems, you should have an excellent result in the end.

It might have been easier just to do a Dell PC restore.
